Brief history of Clifford E. Johnson Post 9759
Post 9759 received its charter 22 February 1948 with 47 members. The Ladies Auxiliary chartered 30 Mar 1948.
The original meeting place was what later became the Hollywood Dining Center on N. Second St. in Loves Park.
From there we moved to the Masonic Temple on Merrill Ave. just off N. Second St. After a short time, the new meeting place was moved to the Byron Easton farm. In 1953 the meetings were held in the basement of what is now the Sahara Lounge on Forest Hills Rd.
At one time during this period, the membership was approximately 1500. From there it was moved to a small building next door that was an iron fabricating business. Part of the reason for the move was that the membership had dropped to 22 members.
In 1964 the members moved to the current location on Windsor Rd. At that time, what is now the canteen, was the entire building.
In 1969 fish fries were started on Friday nights. The kitchen then was what is now the office.
In 1970 the members spent $5000 to build the bar section of the canteen. In 1971 another $5000 was spent to purchase the north portion of the parking lot. That made enough room so that in 1972 another $5500 was used to construct the dining hall as it is today.
